Does anyone know if airfares go down the closer you get to the date, or do they usually go up?

I tried booking a ticket home for the summer (I live in Japan) on Orbitz, but it timed out. By the time I was able to get back online the next day, the fares had already skyrocketed! I heard the fares fluxuate, but this is redicules! Anyone know if you keep checking in on airfares, do they sometimes go down, or do other airlines sometimes offer more discount airfares from time to time? It is driving me nuts!

Usually fares go up the closer you get to the date of the flight . 21 days or more ahead of the flight is generally the cheapest you will find . There are sometimes special promotions for frequent fliers .

But yes, sometimes fares go down, too.
