How long should I wait for prices to go down on airfares before I just give up and buy tickets?

I’m flying from the midwest to Los Angeles in mid-January. Typically, this is a very cheap time of year to fly. But, right now, even tickets for Christmastime are cheaper. Have the airlines just not put out their January specials yet?

I’m reluctant to wait too long in case the prices go up. How long should I wait?
